Installation
Difficulty: Advanced | Tools: Phillips and flathead screwdrivers, glue or a small zip tie
The console bezel has to come out. You'll move the trim ring to the new boot, mount it to the bezel, and reinstall.

Step 1. Remove the instrument cluster bezel: 3 left-side and 4 front screws, then the headlight knob (press its spring clip and pull). Lower the steering wheel, unscrew the tilt lever, slide the bezel out, and reinstall the lever.

Step 2. Remove the radio bezel: 2 left-side, 2 right-front and 2 bottom screws. Push up on the dash slightly so it clears the nut heads.

Step 3. Remove the shift knob: pop off the shift diagram cap, pry out the retaining pin, and unscrew the knob. On 1986-87 4+3 cars with the overdrive button on the stick, count the turns as you unscrew the overdrive rod and reinstall it the same number of turns.

Step 4. Remove the center console bezel: 2 screws below the window switches and 3 inside the front of the armrest (note how the armrest latch sits). Lift and slide it slightly left to clear the open armrest.

Step 5. Unplug the cigarette lighter, plus the FX3 Ride Control switch if equipped. The bezel now comes free.

Step 6. Good time to clean the console and bezel while they're out.

Step 7. Remove the 4 screws holding the metal trim plate over the shift boot.

Step 8. Peel the old boot off the trim plate.

Step 9. Remove the trim ring from the top of the old boot: turn it inside out, peel the glued tabs off, and pop the ring out. Factory boots on these years are stapled to the trim ring, so remove the staples too.

Step 10. Turn the new boot inside out and press the trim ring through the opening until the top of the leather tabs reaches the top of the ring. Glue it, or secure tightly with a small zip tie.

Step 11. Turn the boot right side out and set it on the console bezel. The holes in the leather line up with the trim plate and bezel holes; no glue needed.

Step 12. Start all 4 screws finger-tight, pull the slack out of each side, then tighten and check that nothing pulls loose.

Step 13. Reinstall everything in reverse order and check that the boot has slack in every gear so nothing binds.
Leather care: apply a leather conditioner with UV protection every 4-6 weeks to keep it from drying out and cracking.
